The intoxicating music of Bossa Nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim played by the noted Brazilian pianist Fabio Caramuru is the featured attraction in an upcoming Guest Artist Concert at Arizona State University.
Caramuru will perform on (Wednesday) Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music's Katzin Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. The School of Music is located on the main ASU campus in Tempe at Mill Avenue and Gammage Parkway. Call the School of Music Information Line for current parking information, 965-TUNE (8863) .
The prize-winning musician has dedicated himself to transcribing Jobim's music for the piano. He has already published a CD that has been highly acclaimed in Germany and France. Caramuru is the director of the Tagliaferro Foundation in San Paulo, which is in memory of famous Brazilian-French pianist Magda Tagliaferro.
Jobim personified the subtle, yet exhilarating bossa nova music. He wrote his songs as pop tunes, in the same way that his predecessors and peers - Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers - wrote their classics. Jobim's works were to be performed by and for people of musical persuasions. One of the keys of the composer's success in the U.S. was the fact that his songs, originally composed in Portuguese -- including Desafinado, One-Note Samba, Girl from Ipanema and Water to Drink -- were quickly transformed with new English lyrics, so acceptance came more easily.
